- JCB Launches 403E Electric Ultra Compact Loader
A new version of JCB's 403E ultra-compact electric loader keeps the operator warm and snug as it eliminates at-source emissions and reduces a farm's carbon footprint. The new machine is equipped with a fully glazed, heated cab designed to provide a comfortable environment while minimising its draw on battery power, despite having heated front and rear windscreens, a heated seat and three-speed blower, and auto control features that warm-up the cab without reducing the machine’s power reserves. The 403E was introduced in 2023 with a fixed or folding open canopy as part of JCB’s growing E-Tech range of battery-electric farming and light construction machines that offer minimal running costs, exceptionally low operator and bystander noise levels, and an opportunity for businesses to lower their carbon footprint. The new JCB 403E Full Cab features include: 972kg or 1,090kg tipping load; 2.9m or 3.1m lift height with parallel-lift arms. 33.4kW electric drive motor with 0.5kph, 8kph and 20kph speed ranges. 20kWh lithium-ion battery providing four- to five-hour mixed-cycle work time. 20kW electric motor-driven hydraulics with ‘shovel/bucket’ and ‘fork’ modes. On-board and off-board battery charging solutions for 2hr to 8hr full charges. Full-time four-wheel drive, open or locking axle differentials, pivot steering JCB Agriculture Managing Director John Smith, said: “Providing a fully enclosed, warm and weather-proof working environment involved a lot more than just taking the cab from the 403 diesel and installing it on the all-electric version." “A key requirement of any electrically-driven machine is a decent amount of work-time between charges; by designing special control functions for the 403E Full Cab, we meet that demand while keeping the operator warm and comfortable.” Powertrain The 403E – JCB’s first fully electric ultra-compact wheeled loader – has a 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack, among the largest in the sector, providing four to five hours of continuous use in a mixed operating cycle. This is sufficient for a full-day’s work on a typical pig, poultry or dairy farm, or in commercial horticulture, especially if top-up charges are taken during breaks. A tipping load of 972kg or 1,090kg (with the heavy-duty counter-weight) and a choice of 2.9 metre or 3.1 metre lift heights with parallel-lift loader arms makes the 403E a practical and highly manoeuvrable proposition for handling chores in and around farm and horticultural buildings. And given an all-up weight of around 2.6 tonnes, the canopy and Full Cab versions of the machine can be transported quickly and easily between sites on a 3.5 tonne road trailer behind a 4x4 SUV or pick-up, or a light commercial vehicle. Cab environment For the new 403E Full Cab loader, JCB installs a 2.2kW heater with three temperature settings and a “blower boost” function to rapidly increase the interior temperature for 10 minutes before switching off to conserve energy. The heater is automatically disabled to preserve battery power if the cab doors are open, but in warmer months, the blower can be used to circulate air regardless of whether the doors are open or closed. During cold periods, a timer function can be used to warm up the cab for 30 minutes while the battery and charger are connected so that the machine remains primed ready to work with a full charge. A heated seat is an added comfort that will also conserve energy and run time by reducing the operator’s reliance on the cab heater, and heating elements rapidly defrost or clear condensation from the front and rear windscreen for clear visibility as work gets under way.
- Food Industry Warns Treasury Of Risks To Supply Chains
The food manufacturing industry, which contributes £162 billion to the economy and supports over 4.5 million jobs, has joined forces like never before to urge the Treasury to rethink changes to inheritance tax announced at the Budget. Led by the NFU, a letter from the food supply chain, which includes all major supermarket retailers, has voiced concerns about the government’s plan to scrap Agricultural Property Relief (APR) and Business Property Relief (BPR). The coalition warns that removing these reliefs threatens the long-term stability of the nation's food resilience, which relies on continued investment to futureproof sustainable food production, at a time when the government has stated that food security is national security. It also highlights the barriers the changes could cause for boosting growth and productivity in the sector and tackling diet-related health issues. NFU President Tom Bradshaw said: “We have made our views on this awful family farm tax very clear. Now so have 57 other businesses across the food supply chain. This abhorrent policy has united farming and the whole of the supply chain like never before. How loud does the chorus of concern around the policy have to be for Treasury to listen and take action?" “Scrapping critical inheritance tax reliefs not only affects family-run farms, but it stands to have far-reaching consequences for the whole industry, from food processors to supermarket retailers." “Faced with a backdrop of global instability, a changing climate, high input costs and a growing global population to feed, this policy risks destabilising an industry that is vital to feeding the nation and one that supports millions of jobs. Because when one link in a supply chain, the link that is producing the raw materials, has a crisis of confidence and has already all but stopped investment, it has an impact on the whole of the industry; an impact that will eventually be felt on supermarket shelves. Is this the vision for economic growth the country was promised? “The Chancellor has said she has seen no alternative proposals put forward, yet there have been solutions put forward by tax experts and Labour MPs. With large numbers of Britain’s biggest manufacturing sector – food and drink – against this policy, it is time for the Chancellor to heed our calls to meet to discuss options and find a way forward out of this current mess.” Signatories from the food industry include: NFU NFU Cymru NFU Scotland UFU Morrisons Asda Marks & Spencer Waitrose Lidl Sainsbury’s Tesco Aldi Co-op Arla Muller Yeo Valley ABP Rodda’s County Milk Belton Farm Paynes Dairy Organic Herd Long Clawson RABDF PTF Dairy UK First Milk Meadow Cotteswold Dunbia Kepak Pickstock (Telford) Myton Food Group Cranswick Dovecote Park 2 Sisters Food Group Puffin Produce Castell Howell Foyle Food Group C&J Meats WD Meats Hewitt Meats Pembrokeshire Creamery Leprino South Caernarfon Creameries Laeth y Llan Cyf/Village Dairy Calon Wen Dairy Crediton Dairy Bawnbua Foods NI NIMEA Dale Farm Fane Valley Ready Eggs Northern Ireland Food and Drink Association Pilgrims Photo: NFU President Tom Bradshaw signing a Stop the Family Farm Tax poster
