Wates To Deliver New Highgate Junior School
11th March 2014 Paul Andrews
Family firm Wates selected to construct new Highgate Junior School.
Wates Construction has been appointed as the main contractor to deliver the construction of the new Junior School building for Highgate Junior School in North London.
The work will see the contractor build a brand new 4,320 sq m facility for 350 pupils aged 7 to 11 years. Features will comprise teaching spaces and a main school hall to replace the Cholmeley House library and teaching block, which will be demolished as part of the project.
Construction will commence in March and will also include extensive refurbishment and re-roofing works to Highgate Junior School’s Ingleholme Building, one of only a few remaining 19th century ‘villa’ houses in Highgate.
Designed by Architype, the scheme will incorporate energy efficiency measures to enhance sustainability. Contributing to an expected BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating, features will include photovoltaic panels and a green roof to encourage biodiversity. The building will also follow Passivhaus principles and utilise triple glazing to all windows to improve building insulation.
Completion of the project is scheduled for the end of next year and will also see the contractor deliver external works.
Richard Shroll, Business Unit Director, Wates Construction, London and Kent, commented: “Wates has a proven track record of delivering exceptional educational facilities and we will be working in close partnership with Highgate Junior School to ensure that this project enhances both the curriculum delivery for teachers and the learning experience for pupils. Working alongside live school environments calls for very meticulous planning and the site team have already begun our engagement with the school to ensure that minimal disruption is caused throughout the project.”
Adam Pettitt, Head Master, added: “We are all, pupils and staff alike, incredibly excited at the prospect of having a new school and look forward with great anticipation to its opening at the end of our 450th anniversary year in 2015.”
The Junior School is one of Highgate’s three ‘schools in one’: the Pre-Preparatory School (ages 3-7), the Junior School (ages 7-11) and the Senior School (ages 11-18).
