About Mactaggart & Mickel Homes Ltd
Mactaggart & Mickel, award winning family housebuilder has been hand-crafting new homes in Scotland for more than eighty years.
We can now offer our award winning building skills to external organisations through Mactaggart & Mickel Contracts. This construction activity ranges from entire projects to completing an unfinished development. We can work with registered social landlords and others to create new affordable housing communities.
Mactaggart & Mickel Timber Systems manufactures open and closed panel timber frames which can be erected by our own squads, as well as stair-cases and bespoke self builds to your specification. So whether you require several timber frames or even a one-off bespoke staircase, we can provide a high quality and efficient service.
The founders of our Company had been housebuilders during Victoria's long reign. They were however engaged not just narrowly in construction but were importers of the raw material required for their business.
By the early 1900's, the Mactaggarts and the Mickels had come together and with others, who would later establish their own shorter lived building companies, were constructing tenements in the West End of Glasgow. They had also built in London's Portland Place but their Glasgow tenements are now locally recognised as the pinnacle of achievement in tenemental construction.
The opportunities offered by the government to be involved in a housing boom following the First World War were not missed. In the four years from 1922, in Glasgow and in Lanarkshire, the Mactaggarts and Mickels in partnership built over 3000 houses for local authorities before registering as a Limited company in 1925.
The years from 1939 to 1945 were not uneventful and were occupied with work for the war effort. Also, in 1943 the Mactaggarts severed their connection with the Company and since that time Mactaggart & Mickel Limited has become entirely a concern of the Mickel family, remaining so to this day.
Throughout the years we have supported many local groups and institutions. Major events in which we have been involved include Glasgow's Garden Festival in 1988 where we designed the 'Broom Milk Bar' as our contribution. During the Year of Culture in 1990 a number of items from our archive were exhibited at 'Glasgow's Glasgow'. In 1999 we were involved in the “Homes for the Future” project at Glasgow Green. Looking forward, we are immensely proud to be a partner in the City Legacy Consortium, which began work in 2012 on the Athletes Village for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, a development which will be transformed into 700+ new residential homes in the Dalmarnock area of the city after the Games.
2010 was our 85th year in business, which we marked with two events at our Head Office in Glasgow, attended by our employees and some of our long-term suppliers, stakeholders and other associates. The family and personal links we have forged grow ever stronger and we take pride in the long service of our workforce. At a time when other builders entirely sub-contract we prefer wherever possible to employ tradesmen whom we know and who, in turn, know our methods and standards.
The Company strives by its own efforts to maintain its place as the local housebuilder with the highest reputation and we have won many awards over the years for design, quality and customer service. Most recently we received the Best Newcomer to CSR Award at the Quality Scotland Business Excellence Awards 2011, and we were named Small Housebuilder of the Year for the second year running at the Scottish Home Awards 2011, as well as picking up the overall Housebuilder of the Year Award. Our Site Managers also have a long record of achievement at the annual NHBC Pride in the Job Awards.
We at Mactaggart & Mickel Group firmly believe that our innate ability to do things is well founded in our sound experience and achievements in house building which has patently defied economic uncertainty. Indeed the story of Mactaggart & Mickel is a true testament to the unique combination of innovation and tradition, delivered strategically by a financially sound company.
