About A Hume (Outfitters) Limited

Selling the finest brands in country clothing locally to our loyal clientele in the Scottish Borders from our Kelso shops in The Square and Horsemarket, and also worldwide to over 25,000 customers

Welcome from Archie Hume

I would like to wish you a warm welcome to A Hume online. This is the page where you get to find out a bit more about who we are, where we are and what we do.

We have been around for over 80 years so there’s a fair bit of history. My grandfather, also an Archie, but known as Arch, founded A Hume, Gentlemen’s Outfitter, in 1929. He ran an entirely made-to-measure tailoring business and although we continue to offer a made-to-measure service, he could never have envisioned how his business would grow.

These days we sell the finest brands in country clothing locally to our loyal clientele in the Scottish Borders from our Kelso shops in The Square and Horsemarket, and also worldwide to over 25,000 customers.

Our timeline gives you an insight into how our business has evolved over the years:

1929- Arch Hume opens A Hume, Gentlemen’s Outfitter, The Square Kelso. All suits and jackets are made-to-measure in-house by Arch’s team of five highly specialised tailors using the finest tweeds and cloths. A service we offer to this day.

1929 - The start of our long association with Reid & Taylor Mill, at Langholm, who continue to supply A Hume with our exclusive Bladen Tweeds.

1948- Jock Hume joins the business and eventually takes over from his father.

Late 1960’s - Jock Hume adds ready-to-wear collections to the traditional tailoring business.

Early 1970’s - A Hume begins its longstanding partnership with Magee and Bladen

1979- A Hume celebrates its 50th Anniversary.

1982- Archie Hume, the third generation, joins his father in the business.

1987- Jock Hume dies and is succeeded by his son Archie Hume.

2000- Archie Hume introduces Australian brand RM Williams, bringing a contemporary twist to the traditional offering.

2002 to 2004 - Archie continues to expand the brand offering, adding Dubarry and William Lockie.

2007- Archie’s wife Karen joins the company to develop the ecommerce business, A Hume launches its first Ladieswear range and we expand our William Lockie range.

2007- goes live - we’re online and selling to customers all over the globe without losing our traditional values. We continue to offer free alterations by our in-house seamstress to all customers including those shopping online.

2009 - We’ve stocked Barbour for many years, but in ’09 we greatly expand our range.

2010- Winner, Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards, Independent Retailer of the Year and finalist, Growth Business of the Year. A Hume continues to expand the brand offering; Millican, Gant, Deakin & Francis and Estribos join the family.

2011 - Finalist, Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards, Growth Business of the Year. In keeping with the theme, we need more space and acquire warehousing to keep up with demand and accommodate our expanding range.

2012- It’s a big year. Winner: The Herald Scottish Family Business Awards - Fastest Growing Business, plus Small/Medum Family Business of the Year. Winner: Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards - Retailer and Town Centre Business of the Year. The A Hume Blog is launched our way of staying close to those we value most, we introduce the Schoffel and Loake brand and we open our menswear and footwear shop at 22 Horsemarket, Kelso. Our mobile friendly (Smartphone) version of the website is launched offering our customers a seamless way to contact, browse and buy from A Hume.

2013- Our mobile website gets smarter, faster, bigger and better. Customers seem to like it and now 14% of visits happen on the move. We install iPads in our Kelso shops allowing customers to interact with the website, blog, social pages and product related videos. We add Schoffel to our expanding Ladieswear range and start preparing for our 85th Anniversary. Work starts on our exclusive, celebratory limited edition A Hume 1929 – 2014 Tweed range for Men and Ladies.

What makes us special

Without a doubt it is our uncompromising standards, Archie’s discerning eye as a buyer and our commitment to the highest possible level of customer service.

From our home in the heart of the Scottish Borders, an area internationally renowned for its textiles and cashmere, we are uniquely positioned to source the finest cloths and yarns for our customers. We like to describe our range as traditional, with a contemporary twist.

Our website has transformed our business and enables us to bring our extensive menswear and ladieswear collections to customers all over the world but, call us old fashioned, we still like to deliver a personalised service. We offer a bespoke service, shirts in collar sizes up to 20”, jackets/suits up to 52” and free alterations by our in-house seamstress to all customers including those shopping online.

We don’t just say we like to hear what you think, we mean it. If there’s something you’re looking for that’s not on our website, or in sizes or colours not displayed, please email, or pick up the phone. Going the extra mile for our customers is what motivates us and keeps us going.

We’re always delighted by the number of our online customers who make the pilgrimage to our shops in Kelso, we offer a few brands in store that are not generally displayed online, though we will always fulfill special requests and of course we wouldn’t be a Scottish Gentlemen’s Outfitter if we didn’t offer a Kilt and Trews service. Our kilts page offers a taster but there’s nothing quite like a visit to give you a flavour of traditional Scottish attire.
