‘Cherishing heritage, creating special places, building for the future’ is not only the strapline for City & Country’s award-winning conservation property business, but also Tim Sargeant’s vision for the family business that is at its core.

Now in its 60th year, City & Country is immensely proud of its reputation as the UK’s leading heritage developer.

As a family-owned business they have a genuine passion to conserve, restore and newly create Britain’s architectural heritage. Embracing the best of the present, through exceptional design and build standards, they sensitively add value to very special places for the enjoyment of those today and for future generations to cherish.

Their experience in the restoration and conversion of historic and listed buildings, combined with the sympathetic and complementary design of new build properties around these nationally important heritage assets and in sensitive conservation areas, has put the company at the forefront of specialist property development.

With one of the most eclectic portfolios of developments in UK housebuilding, sites include former schools, hospitals, factories and mansions. From city penthouses to country mansions, modern studio apartments to traditional family homes, their new and conversion homes are located in some of the UK’s most desirable locations, from major towns and cities, to the countryside and the coast.

City & Country is skilled in developing and enhancing high profile, sensitive sites which require original thinking and they work closely with heritage specialists, local authorities, and conservationists to find sustainable uses for historic and listed buildings.

The company has a dedicated team of in-house specialists whose expertise and flair create outstanding places to live which blend into their unique environments. Their craftsmanship and attention to detail enables them to produce some of the finest and most immaculately finished new and conversion homes within the industry.

Currently the business has ten developments across the UK and, recent launches include the award-winning The 1840, St George’s Gardens in South West London, Sanderling Reach on Mersea Island and Manningtree Park.

Tim is the Chairman and took over the reins from the founders, his father and uncle, in 2002 and has driven the business from those foundations to the success it enjoys today. Tim has taken the business through a prolonged period of growth from 2002 until 2016 before entering a period of consolidation and restructuring from then until now that sees the group poised for a period of further significant growth.

Tim, along with other second generation family members, has been actively involved in the business for more than 20 years. During that period, he has attracted non-family members onto the board as well as encouraged and mentored representatives of the third generation. The success of this strategy has allowed one of the third generation to gain director status through their own hard work and respect from their peers. City & Country is a meritocracy that allows family and non-family members to flourish for the benefit of all shareholders.

Tim has been instrumental in developing the business and the team that is driving it forward. Constantly evolving, Tim is an agent of change within City & Country. embracing the opportunity to make the impossible possible and has invested in people, R&D and in the future to make that happen.

Tim is a truly deserving member of the Family Business Top 100.
