Staff Gear Up For ABP Southampton Marathon

9th February 2017 Paul Andrews

Hendy FordStore’s car showroom in Eastleigh was transformed recently by Nuffield Health as it hosted a special exercise class in preparation for the ABP Southampton Marathon.

Luxury Mustangs and sporty Focus models were moved aside as staff took part in a training session with Claire Fitzhenry, wellbeing advisor and personal trainer at the Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital.

Having swapped their usual smart attire for Lycra, more than 15 members of staff ran, jumped and stretched through the hour-long session.

The event was held to help prepare staff for the ABP Southampton Marathon, which takes place in the city on April 23. More than 20 members of staff from Hendy Group are signed up to run and the company is also official transport partner, providing the all-important timing car as well as support vehicles.

Claire Fitzhenry from the Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital, official healthcare partner of the run, said: “Everyone did so well and I was thoroughly impressed with the level of fitness from the Hendy team at this fairly early stage in training. Judging by how they performed at the circuit class I expect to see them flying through the finish line on April 23.”

Mark Busby, group commercial director at Hendy Group, added: “We’ve had celebrities, MPs and even animals pass through our showroom before but hosting a circuit training class was a first for us! We’re thrilled with how motivated our staff have been with their training and delighted to be able to put on a fun event like this for them.”

Chris Rees, race organiser, said: “This is just what we want to see – businesses coming together and supporting their runners in this year’s ABP Southampton Marathon. A big high five to Hendy Group and Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital for putting on such a fun training session.”

More than 6,000 runners have signed up to take part in the ABP Southampton Marathon, half marathon and 10k.  Around half are opting to run the half marathon with the remainder split between the 10k and marathon options.

For 2017 the route once again takes in some of the city’s landmarks including the Itchen Bridge which offers runners a great challenge and stunning views over the city. Runners also take in St Mary’s Stadium, home to Southampton Football Club with the varied route also includes Southampton Common.

The full marathon is two laps of the half marathon route -  keeping the event within the confines of the city centre and meaning supporters don’t have to travel as far to cheer on their friends and family running.
