Johnstons Of Elgin Triumph!
25th September 2017 Paul Andrews
Luxury cashmere brand Johnstons of Elgin has been named Family business of the year at the 2017 UK Private Business Awards.
Commended for commitment to both craftsmanship and its employees, the Scottish company was noted for it’s product innovation, preservation of traditional techniques and the conservation of increasingly rare skills.
Generations of families have and still work at Johnstons of Elgin to create the finest cashmere and in it’s 220th year, it proudly still uses one of the last few vertical mills in the UK, carrying out all the processes from raw cashmere and fine woollen fibres right through to the finished product.
Simon Cotton, CEO of Johnstons of Elgin says: “We’re so proud of what our family business has achieved over the last 220 years. We strive to innovate using the best quality fabrics and nurture unrivalled craftsmanship. To be recognised for this commitment is fantastic and we’re looking forward to celebrating with the team back in Elgin!”
The award was sponsored by Family Business United and as Paul Andrews, Founder of Family Business United explains, "This was an incredibly tough category with some outstanding finalists but Johnstons of Elgin were worthy winners. They have a great heritage but are clearly focused in the present day with an eye on where they are going. Strong governance and great products enhance their appeal and they are great amabassadors for the family business sector and deserve all of the accolades associated with this Family Business of the Year title too."
In the two centuries following its establishment in 1797, Johnstons of Elgin has been owned by just two families – the Johnstons and the Harrisons. It is one of the last few vertical mills in the UK still carrying out all the processes from raw cashmere and fine woollen fibres right through to the finished product.
Johnstons of Elgin’s mills in Elgin and Hawick employ over 1000 people, including highly skilled textile craftsmen and women.
