Charlie Mullins Backs Family Business Campaign
3rd February 2014 Paul Andrews
Campaign seeking to celebrate the best of British family firms endorsed by Charlie Mullins of Pimlico Plumbers
There is often a lack of recognition and respect for the successful contribution that family businesses have made to the UK economy over the years, so to champion their cause, Family Business United has teamed up with Pimlico Plumbers for the launch of a new campaign, enititled 'A Family Owned British Business.'
According to government statistics there are over 3 million family firms across the UK that employ over 9 million people and contribute over a quarter of total GDP too.
As Charlie points out, "Pimlico Plumbers has come a long way since we began in 1979. We now employ over 200 staff, including 10 members of my own family and we understand what it means to be a family firm. The business is like another member of the family and we are proud of what we do, where we have come from and where we are going."
2014 should be another milestone for Pimlico Plumbers as they are on target to break the £20 million turnover barrier for the first time.
As Charlie adds, "Family firms are the backbone of the UK economy and major employers the length and breadth of the country. They continue to make a difference to the lives of communities across Britain and we are pleased to be able to champion this cause that not only raises the profile of family businesses but helps to give them the recognition they deserve."
Paul Andrews, Founder and Managing Director of Family Business United, the UK's leading online forum for family firms who are behind the campaign, is delighted to be working with Charlie and the team at Pimlico. He adds, "All too often family firms are disregarded as being small, lifestyle businesses when the reality is very different. They employ millions of people, generate significant income for the country and help to contribute to making Britain great at the same time."
Following the launch, family firms across the UK are being encouraged to join the campaign, celebrating their origins and standing up and being counted for what they are, a family business.
As Paul adds, "In recent years, the contribution of family firms has begun to be given the recognition that it deserves, both in the media and by the government. Britain is awash with family firms, household names such as Warburtons, Walkers Shortbread, Baxters, The Morgan Motor Company, Arnold Clark, Stannah Stairlifts and The Goring Hotel and thousands of others that are equally as proud of their family ownership, heritage and values."
"Many family firms across the UK have transcended generations and fly the flag for the sector, firms such as Whitechapel Bell Foundry, RJ Balson and R Durtnell & Sons but other younger firms such as Pimlico Plumbers also deserve recognition for building great businesses too."
The 'Family Owned British Business' campaign seeks to put all family businesses on the map and at the same time to dispel some of the myths surrounding the sector. Family firms are serious businesses, significant employers and generate great business opportunities in and outside of the UK today.
As Charlie concludes, "Pimlico Plumbers was my dream, my vision, and it has now grown to be an integral part of my life, the life of my family and the employees who work for us. We are very much a family owned firm, proud to be British and most definitely in it for the long run. This campaign resonates at the very heart of what we are all about, a British family business through and through and I am delighted to be involved with it right from the start."
