Bart Ingredients Continues Growth

Multi-million pound deal as family firm seeks further growth of the business.

Bristol-based The Bart Ingredients Company Limited (“Bart”), the well-known manufacturer and supplier of herbs and spices, is to expand into the wet ingredients market after acquiring the assets of Berkshire-based OTP Foods Limited (“OTP”) in a multimillion pound deal funded by Santander Corporate & Commercial.

Bart sees wet ingredients such as pastes and sauces as a primary growth area, confirmed by market statistics which show that this category is currently growing at a year-on-year rate of 15%.

Founded as Bart Spices in 1963 by Reg and Jo Bartlam, the company has grown to become one of Britain’s largest suppliers of herbs and spices. Bart led the market by becoming an organic supplier in 1998, pioneering the introduction of wet herbs with a range of ready-to-use pastes and being the first company to supply Fairtrade spice to UK supermarkets in 2005.

Bart currently supplies c.120 herbs and spices to UK supermarkets, covering a broader spectrum than any of its competitors. Along with the acquisition of OTP Foods, a specialist in wet ingredients, the funding will allow for further organic growth and see Bart capitalising on other market opportunities and growth areas.

At the same time, they want products which are flexible and easy to use with simple cooking techniques, and they respond to meal solutions that combine practicality and taste."
